{"id":320,"date":"2010-10-13T21:33:46","date_gmt":"2010-10-14T02:33:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mikeraffety.com\/blog\/?p=320"},"modified":"2010-10-13T21:33:46","modified_gmt":"2010-10-14T02:33:46","slug":"a-trip-down-memory-lane","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mikeraffety.com\/blog\/2010\/10\/13\/a-trip-down-memory-lane\/","title":{"rendered":"A trip down memory lane"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mikeraffety.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/calendar.jpg\"><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/mikeraffety.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/calendar.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-461\" title=\"calendar\" src=\"http:\/\/mikeraffety.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/calendar-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"calendar\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>It&#8217;s often fun to indulge in a little nostalgia for the &#8220;good old days&#8221;, and many times, there might even be a lesson to be learned from what others have done before us.\u00a0 Does your club keep records of club activities like meeting agendas?\u00a0 There&#8217;s a list of <a title=\"Retention of Club Records Guidelines\" href=\"http:\/\/www.toastmasters.org\/Members\/OfficerResources\/ClubOfficerResources\/RetentionofClubRecords.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">minimum retention policies here<\/a>, but keeping some things even longer is useful when it comes time to celebrate your club&#8217;s 10th, 20th, or even 50th anniversary.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve attended such celebrations, and it&#8217;s very interesting to look at these documents from a different time, when only men could join, when they all wore suits and ties, and it was all quite formal.\u00a0 Paging through a &#8220;Basic Training&#8221; manual from the 195os tells us a lot about where our organization came from, but it&#8217;s surprising how some projects look almost unchanged, like the Icebreaker.<\/p>\n<p>A corporate club I helped to charter is nearing its 10th anniversary and  I happened to run into a newer but very involved member from it at a  recent contest.\u00a0 She didn&#8217;t know I had been a club sponsor, but I still  have the demo meeting agenda and the charter party agenda, and she wants  to borrow them!<\/p>\n<p>The Internet has done much to change how Toastmasters works.\u00a0 There&#8217;s an <a title=\"Internet Archive and Wayback Machine\" href=\"http:\/\/www.archive.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">organization which is busily archiving everything publicly available on the web<\/a> (once it&#8217;s on the Internet, there&#8217;s no way to completely delete anything).\u00a0 Thanks to that, I was able to put together a little slide show of how the Toastmasters International web site has looked over the years, going way back to 1996.\u00a0 Seeing announcements from 2004 like &#8220;NEW!
